Southern Sympathizer
03:06
|
|||
I want to give you the blue plate special
But honey child, you know that I'm not from the South
I need a chest for my head to nestle
I'm a Southern Sympathizer with a sweet Yankee mouth
I am no harlot, I am no vixen
But honey child, you know that I got my ways
I live right here on the Mason Dixon
Where the battle will be raging half an hour away
Will you brave it till the morning with your sweet Liza Jane?
And when this cruel world is finally ended
I'll keep you in my bed beyond the break of day
For there's a garden that must be tended
Will you take me down to Dixie with your wicked ways?
Will you take me down to Dixie with your wicked ways?
I want to give you the blue plate special
But honey child, you know that I'm not from the South
There is no devil that I won't wrestle
I'm a Southern Sympathizer with a sweet Yankee mouth
I'm a Southern Sympathizer with a sweet Yankee mouth
I'm a Southern Sympathizer with a sweet Yankee mouth

It's About Time
03:44
|
|||
Toenails are bright green
You’re at the beginning
Clock falls off wall
And you are winning
And it’s about time
It’s about time
You’re brilliant as any stone
In the hard earth
Open your arms wide
Prepare to receive your worth
And it’s about time
It’s about time
I made a cherry pie to celebrate!
Up and over the mountain we go…
And it’s about time
It’s about time
Sailing ships
And snakes coiled in circles
These are good signs
The ocean will bring you her pearls
And it’s about time
It’s about time

One Breath at a Time
03:41
|
|||
Do not leave your heart to harden
Throw your mind into the garden
Live your life without a pardon
One breath at a time
One breath
Gaze into the greening bower
Thorn and leaf and rosy flower
Rising sap and growing power
One breath at a time
One breath at a time
Day into day
Into moon into moon into moon
Into year into year
Into birth into birth
Into earth, into sea, into circles and spires
Into wind, into Death, into Time, into embers
Forgotten songs, bodies tuned to the sway
Of the notes and beats awakening
In slumbering days
Listening to what the trees are saying
Whispering tunes of ancestors
Singing songs of Universes
One breath at a time
One breath at a time

Blood Red Volcano
05:27
|

Blood Red Volcano
Wait a minute
I think you’re telling me lies
Satan’s in it
I’ve seen him laugh in your eyes
Do you think I am blind?
It don’t take no second sight
Way down there
In that valley below
Is erupting
A Blood Red Volcano
Do you think I don’t know
It really must be time
Time to go
Time to go
Blood Red Volcano
I can feel you
Sending your curses my way
But I’m a mirror
Reflecting back what you say
Do you think I’ll just take
Your poison I’ll blow you…away
Blow you away
Blood Red Volcano

Goldmine
02:56
|
|||
You’re stuck here
Like a bad dream
With your clothes off
In the classroom
And you can’t remember the answer to the question
The teacher is asking you
And you’re open
Like a faucet
That just keeps on
with its drippin’
Or a broken zipper on your favorite pair of pants—yeah
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask…
Cuz I breathe in
And I breathe out
But I can’t reach
To the center of the earth today
Seems I’m emptier than a garbage truck
Before the morning run
And I crave love
Like a baby that’s neglected
Am I weak to feel this way?
You’re in a tower with a room of straw
Face this task
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask…
And I break into the morning like it’s phony glass
It only cuts you up if you hold back
And the wind’s up
On the bay here
And the moon’s big
In the sky whether you’re living on the street
Or a condominium
You still need the cash
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask

Aphrodite

|

Aphrodite
It came to me in the sweet springtime
It came to me
It came to me like a new wine
It came to me
And how can something so strong
Feel so right and so wrong
At the same time
Why do I feel this way
Seems like every day
I’m changing my mind
Changing my mind
What came to me, was it love or was it something else
What came to me
When you stepped into my eyes
Into myself
I look into you
Trying to find something new
Something not planned
Then I’m torn and confused
I know I have to choose
But where do I stand
Where do I stand
She came to me in a field of flowers
She came to me
Aphrodite, with her golden crown
She came to me
She suddenly was there
Her hands in my hair
Not letting me be
Then wide as the sky
A feeling like a tide came over me
Over me
It came to me in the sweet springtime
It came to me
It came to me like a new wine
It came to me
Seems something so strong
Is never wrong
At the right time
And I’m learning to find my way
Cuz every single day
She changes my mind
My heart and mind
It came to me
It came to me
It came to me

Wanderlust
03:50
|
|||
Inside the edges of the sky
Gypsy clouds surround the moon
Sideways shining enchanted eye
Sings stillness to the gloom
And you’re wondering which way to turn
And you’re listening for who you should trust
When you find the freedom from your
Wander wanderlust
Ya-ya….
Let it come in let it go
No story’s carved in stone
From the tip of your head to your toes
From your skin deep into your bones
And you’re checking in with how you feel
And you’re listening for the bloom
When the forest garden
Opens up its song to you

Midnight Train
04:48
|
|||
There’s a girl in Halifax
She likes to write me letters of love
Red lipstick on the back
Of a dirty envelope
I’ve never been to Newfoundland
But I’ve been to Nova Scotia
Sometimes I’m an honest man
I get my feelings from the Ocean
But it’s different in California
Will you be on the midnight train?
Out of the cold clear north it just isn’t the same
Will you be on the midnight train?
Bring me your broken heart
I’ll give you my name
Driving Sunset Boulevard
Everything is shining in motion
Everyone thinks they got it hard
They’re all looking for some devotion
Billboards are bigger and louder than love
Will you be on the midnight train?
Out of the cold clear north it just isn’t the same
Will you be on the midnight train?
Into this wasted world
Of money and fame
I work in this studio
I watch the stars coming and going
City’s drying out my bones
But I remember water flowing
Through the ice in Nova Scotia
Will you be on the midnight train?
Out of the cold clear north it just isn’t the same
Will you be on the midnight train?
Come and cleanse my heart
With a promise of rain

Outlaw Man
02:36
|
|||
He come riding in my town
An Outlaw Man
High in the saddle rode he
And I was a pretty maid
Singing a song
And the Outlaw Man wanted me
Take what you need was his motto and creed
Give all the rest to the poor
But the blood flowed like a river
Over my town
And I knew there would be more
His eyes they were bluer than a summer sky
But ice flowed cold in his veins
And I had to leave the Outlaw Man
So I could find my peace again
Come sit by me darlin’
And sing me a song
So all of the world it will know
That I loved you truly
Said the Outlaw Man
Even though you had to go
His eyes they were bluer than a summer sky
But ice flowed cold in his veins
And I had to leave the Outlaw Man
So I could find my peace again

The Garden
04:24
|

The Garden
I heard this story from a woman old and wise
I met her in the market by the oranges and limes
She talked about a garden with fruits sweeter still than these
So I dropped my tomatoes and said tell me more please
Her little eyes they crinkled up, cuz she knew the story well
And she’d been there herself from what I could tell
She said the garden is wide and the rock wall is tall
But the roses climb over it with no trouble at all
And you can get back through the gate you once left behind
And sit all day in the green leafy sunshine
And nobody with a sword will keep you away
But you might see some angels flying, if you want to play
And there are many fruits in this garden, many trees
Go ahead and try some of those, and some of these
Each moment is a blessing that you’re tasting on your tongue
Stay in the garden and your spirit will stay young
And do not be afraid if the snake is at your feet
Coiled in circles, that’s just eternity
Well she talked about this place as if we were standing in it now
And I must admit the fluorescent lights had disappeared somehow
And there were no other shoppers picking through the broccoli
Just the faint smell of peaches, this old woman, and me
And sometimes I could just get a glimpse of what she saw so clearly
And feel the kisses of a mango colored breeze
She said the garden is wide and the rock wall is tall
But the roses climb over it with no trouble at all
And you can get back through the gate you once left behind
And sit all day in the green leafy sunshine

Anyway Anywhere Anytime

|

Anyway Anywhere Anytime
It’s the whittlin’ down of riddle into rhyme
She will drop to her knees
She will marry the breeze
Anyway—anywhere—any time
In the poetry of a forgotten age
Blossoms floating like snow on the page
If she just steals a breath
She will touch lips with death
In the poetry of a forgotten age
With the stillness of a castle built of stone
Roses trailing the wall amidst the bones
Into the empty glass of night
Will be poured pure delight
With the stillness of a castle built of stone
What of the time we have to share
What of the love we have to bear
As deep as midnight’s distant stars
Anyway Anywhere Anytime
It’s the unborn sky reflecting on her mind
She’s absorbed by the sky
Through the blackness of her eye
Anyway, anywhere
See them circling high in the air
Anyway, anywhere, any time

What does it mean to be me
Am I just everything inside my skin
Am I the thoughts that I’m thinking
Does water turn into me
When I am drinking it
What does it mean to be you
Sometimes, we seem so different
Balderdash or tickety-boo
It truly is an experiment
Will I turn into a spectre
When I am dead or return to stardust
Does every good deed really matter
Can love heal the hurt when my heart is in tatters, yeah
How can you really know me
Sometimes we don’t seem so separate
Fal de ra-la-la Fiddle-de-dee
We’re free to be infinite
Collywobbles inside
Of my tummy
I’m so scared
And so excited

Time and experience
Are all that you need
To heal the wounds that bleed (or don’t bleed)
Many have come before
And many will follow
Life only flows in the living
What a miracle we’re here at all
It’s our responsibility to heal
How do we heal
The lost moments
How do we heal
There is an essence
We can embrace
Brand new

Elizabeth Hummel Olympia, Washington
I have been writing songs most of my life. A good bit of recording and performing too. Money comes and goes, but the muse is precious and timeless. I pray that my songs help people through darkness as well as celebrate the light. This music is a village and I am not alone. I am deeply grateful to the many people who have helped me birth these songs in so many ways. You are the Love! ... more
