I wrote this song thinking about all of you out there scattered round the globe, my tribe. We all must find the souls with a consonant vibe during our short time on earth. They aren't always in our blood families, but they are family nonetheless. I think of you as the "Lovers from Mars:" the poets, the hippie-punks, the dreamers, the artists, the ones who think for themselves and try to stretch a bit beyond, up to the stars. It's for the lovers, despite all the reasons to shut love down.

This song is also a memorial for David Bowie, whose backup singers in the 70s were the Spiders from Mars. Since I was a teenager, I have had dreams about David Bowie. In the dreams we have long and wonderful conversations about interesting things. It's weird. I don't usually dream about famous people that I do not know, and though I love Bowie tremendously, I am not like some uber fan. But it has always felt like I actually knew him, even though I did not. I never even saw him perform.

So it was very strange that I wrote this song, and then heard of his death just three days later in January of 2016. He was a Lover from Mars, for sure, and now he is "back to the stars" as the lyrics go.

It took more than three years to make this song to share, and it was the most difficult to bring to fruition on this album. Even after we had mastered all the songs, Brian and I weren't happy with this one, and had to go back to the drawing board. When I finally realized I needed to rock out on the electric guitar, it all came together. Of course--it's for Bowie!

lyrics

I try to explain
Without holding back
But all that I do is wreak havoc with you
I try to love you
But the message gets lost
The devil is laughing his devil’s head off

But I ain’t gonna keep on
Trying to change
If you never love me
Well, I’m good just the same
Cuz it’s love gets us here
And back to the stars
So I’ll reach for the peaches and poets and lovers…

Lovers from Mars
Oh yeah
Lovers from Mars
You know who you are

Oh tenderly
Love at the door
Golden light
Rose petal night…oh night…
Rose petal night

There’s a hole in my head
Where the wind likes to sing
About mermaids and broken
And beautiful things
And I’ll try to love you
And not get it wrong
The devil, he can git back
To where he comes from

Cuz I ain’t gonna keep on
Trying to change
If you wanna love me
Well, I’m here just the same
Cuz it’s love gets us lost
Then back to our hearts
So I’ll reach for the peaches and poets and lovers…

Lovers from Mars
Oh Yeah
Lovers from Mars
Oh Yeah
You know who you are

about

Elizabeth Hummel Olympia, Washington

I have been writing songs most of my life. A good bit of recording and performing too. Money comes and goes, but the muse is precious and timeless. I pray that my songs help people through darkness as well as celebrate the light. This music is a village and I am not alone. I am deeply grateful to the many people who have helped me birth these songs in so many ways. You are the Love! ... more
